Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Sisters Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer have 24 albums, a Grammy, Oscar and a cluster of other prestigious awards between them.

Their latest work, Not Dark Yet - produced by Teddy Thompson - allows fans to look at their individual and collective artistry over their impressive careers, through a collection of songs by some of their favourite singer-songwriters - from Nick Cave to Bob Dylan, Kurt Cobain and The Killers.

It's not a duet record, they assert, but a celebration of their two voices "finding home within each other". In a recent New York Times interview Moorer said singing with her sister was like "going home" - Lynne responded: "We're the bodyguards of each other's soul."

Ahead of the album's official release on 18 August we're offering fans a chance for an early listen on The Independent.

Q&A with Allison

What are you listening to at the moment?

I am listening to a lot of the same things I always listen to — but this morning my son turned on Monk’s “Dinah,” and I was pretty transported. So I think I’ll be listening to more of that for the moment.

What are your plans for the rest of 2017?

2017 will hold touring with my sister in support of “Not Dark Yet,” working on my 2nd book (I just completed work on my first memoir), being a mother, figuring out my next career steps, taking care of my home and relationships, and trying to keep life calm.

First gig, best gig?

I don’t remember the first — I’ve been singing all of my life. Best gig? I hope I haven’t had it yet.

Not Dark Yet, the new album from Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer, is out on 18 August
