From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

"Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria says she was "terrified" to tape a rap video to promote the 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards which she will host in Madrid next month.

In the video the 35-year-old actress belts out a multilingual rap in English and Spanish while wearing a revealing black swimsuit and the hood of a sweatshirt over her head.

"I'm Latin, thighs like satin, I'm here to host, I ain't doin' no chatting, I'm on TV all over the world, I'm a Desperate Housewife in high heels and pearls," she raps before dropping her microphone to the floor.

The promo video was posted on the website of the awards (www.mtvema.com) which will be given out on November 7. It can also be seen on YouTube where it has been viewed nearly 300,000 times.

"I had so much fun doing the promo rap although I was absolutely terrified doing it," Longoria said in an interview distributed by MTV.

"I was only given the script on the day and we had two hours to shoot it so I didn't have time either to get nervous or to back out."

Longoria said she would probably make six to eight outfit changes during the ceremony, which will be broadcast live on MTV channels around the world as well as on the website of the awards.

"At this event there is a kind of a double licence to wear what you want, normal rules don't apply. So I'm going to try and see if I can pull off some way-out outfits," she said.

"I'm still deciding exactly what to wear, but one thing is for sure, I will be wearing" a dress from Victoria Beckham's collection. "She's a good friend now."

US singers Lady Gaga and Katy Perry top the nominations, with five nods apiece.

Perry and US rock band Linkin Park, who are nominated for best rock act and best live act, will perform at the ceremony, as will Kings of Leon, Kid Rock, Ke$ha, Shakira and Rihanna.

The MTV Europe awards have been held each year since 1994. Past host cities include Copenhagen in 2006, Liverpool in 2008, Lisbon in 2005 and Rome in 2004.
