Radha Mitchell's adopted daughter keeps having nightmares about somewhere called Silent Hill, so Mitchell sets off to investigate a nearby ghost town which has that very name. Soon, she's being pursued by religious fanatics, gibbering mutants and knife-wielding zombie nurses, and she's wondering whether the trip was such a bright idea.

Like so many films based on video games, Silent Hill makes no more sense than Pac-Man, but for once the video game formula of solving arbitrary puzzles and encountering ever more outlandish assailants pays off in the cinema. The sheer lack of logic imbues this berserk, blood-soaked horror adventure with the atmosphere of a bad dream from which you can't wake up.
