'Lonesome Jim' joins 'Garden State', 'Elizabethtown' and 'Jersey Girl' in the indie sub-genre of films that have their hero (Casey Affleck) failing to make his fortune in the big city, and then sloping back to his blue-collar home town, where he's redeemed by a sexually eager yet conveniently single beauty (Liv Tyler). Don't be put off, though. 'Lonesome Jim' might be the cheapest and grainiest example of this sub-genre by some margin, but it's also the most grimly funny. Directed by Steve Buscemi, it's a deadpan, dead miserable black comedy which fully deserves cult status.
