Woody Harrelson in talks to join Tom Hardy in Venom

He'll also join the likes of Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, and Jenny Slate

Back in 2016, Woody Harrelson admitted he'd been dying to join the Marvel universe.

At the time, he was talking to Now You See Me 2 co-star Mark Ruffalo and, though he won't be standing side-to-side with Hulk, Harrelson basically got his wish. He won't be joining the MCU, but he is climbing aboard Sony's run of Marvel films.

Variety reports the actor has joined Tom Hardy in Venom, the Spider-Man spin-off revolving around Eddie Brock, the host of an alien symbiote that gives him exceptional powers. Sources state Harrelson will play a henchman of sorts and will also join the likes of Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, and Jenny Slate.

Venom already made his big screen debut in 2007's Spider-Man 3, portrayed by Topher Grace, though this film will mark Sony's new attempts to build a universe outside Tom Holland's Spider-Man and divorced entirely from the studio's connections to the MCU.

Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji) and Jeff Pinkner (The Dark Tower) will pen the film's script, with Ruben Fleischer directing, having already worked with Harrelson on 2009's Zombieland.

Sony had no comment on the casting.
