‘God sees you’: Celebrities react with disgust to deadly pro-Trump riots in Capitol Hill
‘Today revealed the true enemies of this nation’ said actor Mark Ruffalo
Figures from across the US entertainment industry have reacted in shock to the riots at Capitol hill.
Following a speech by outgoing president Donald Trump yesterday (6 January), a crowd of pro-Trump rioters stormed the government headquarters in Washington, DC’s Capitol building.
DC police have said that four people died during the riot, including Air Force veteran Ashli Babbit.
The riot was instigated as an attempt to overturn the result of the recent US presidential election. Trump, who was accused by many of inciting the violence, was locked out of social media sites as a result of his posts made during the riots.
“Facebook and Twitter giving Trump a little time out is NOT ENOUGH,” wrote Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen. “Trump instigated an act of domestic terrorism against America.
“Facebook and Twitter have banned other extremists PERMANENTLY. They must ban Trump PERMANENTLY. NOW! #BanTrumpSaveDemocracy”
Avengers star Mark Ruffalo wrote: “This is a coup attempt on behalf of Trump and his complicit allies. This is All on Trump and his administration. The cowards in the GOP must be held accountable. #CoupAttempt”
Ruffalo also reacted to a video of Black maintenance staff cleaning the corridors of the Capitol building after the majority-white rioters had been removed, writing: “The reality and shame of this country. Now we all see it. Today revealed the true enemies of this nation.”
Comedian Sarah Silverman wrote: "The president nurtured, encouraged, and manifested A COUP. His VERY FINE PEOPLE came straight to the capitol. IN HIS NAME. GOD SEES YOU

Stevie Wonder tweeted: “It is time for the leaders of this country to invoke the 25th Amendment. Isn’t it obvious? Today has made me sad with disbelief with what is happening in my country, a country that has inspired my songs of hope and love.
“I am heartbroken and astounded that this narcissistic and dangerous president would put lives in danger and encourage violent sedition against our government. That man is no longer able to serve as President because he can’t accept defeat. Can we afford 2 more weeks? I say NO!”
P!nk wrote: “As a United States Citizen, and the daughter of two veterans, and the sister of another, I am ashamed of what is happening in Washington. Hypocrisy, shame, Embarrassment. Unpatriotic hypocritical sheep drinking poison Kool aid. This a sad day for America.”
“The irony is pretty funny,” wrote Cardi B. “Weren’t people just wild animals in the summer for demanding justice and now?... Let me just watch.”
