Oscar Wilde spent his final days in painful exile.

Suffering from the aftermath of his brutal imprisonment in England for his love affair with Lord Alfred "Bosie Douglas", the Wilde of the 1890s was penniless and in poor health, but still determined to cling on to the beauty and pleasures which had shaped so much of his life and work.

It's these final years of the author's life that Rupert Everett seeks to explore in The Happy Prince, which sees the actor himself star as Wilde, alongside Colin Firth, Emily Watson, Colin Morgan, and Edwin Thomas.

This isn't the first Everett has taken on the role of the literary legend, playing Wilde onstage in David Hare's The Judas Kiss in 2012. However, this version seeks to illuminate the final act of his life, journeying from England to France and Italy.

A new clip glimpses at a flashback of the trials Wilde endured during the process of his imprisonment for what was termed "indecency" - humiliated and shunned by society because of his sexuality. This Saturday, 19 May, will mark the anniversary of his release from prison.

The Happy Prince will hit UK cinemas 15 June.
