The Ron Howard movie looks set to drop 66% weekend-to-weekend

Solo: A Star Wars Story opened to disappointing box-office figures, Disney admitting they would be looking into why the Han Solo spin-off failed to make the huge numbers they are accustomed to.

While some analysts thought the second weekend in cinemas could redeem the movie, they have been proven wrong as Solo has plummeted an estimated 66% weekend-to-weekend.

According to Deadline, the Ron Howard-directed movie will likely earn just $28.8 million over the three days, only just beating out Deadpool 2 by $5,3 million.

However, the Ryan Reynolds-fronted superhero movie has been playing in cinemas one week longer than Solo and will have grossed around $254.8 million in total in the United States. Solo, on the other hand, will have only just reached $148.3 million.

Many analysts have put the disappointing box office run down to Disney realising too many Star Wars movies in quick succession (The Last Jedi came out last December) plus a general antagonism towards the spin-off. Over in the US, Avengers Infinity War continues to bring in millions, the third Avengers film estimated to add another $10.6 million to its overall total, which now tops $643 million domestically.

Newcomer Adrift looks set to come just ahead of Avengers, with an $11 million weekend, while Johnny Knoxville comedy Action Point disappoints with an estimated $2.2 million weekend from a $19 million budget.

Next weekend’s box office looks much healthier, with Ocean's 8, Hotel Artemis, and Hereditary (which looks set to become a runaway horror success story) all heading to US cinemas. Over here in the UK, we have Jurassic World: The Fallen Kingdom to look forward to this Wednesday (6 June).
