Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

As Scotland votes on its independence from the United Kingdom, Braveheart has rocketed up the Amazon DVD charts, rising from 1074th to 454th place.

It's a bit sad when you think about it - scores of people were so riled up with Yes campaign romance that they logged onto Amazon, paid £10.29 plus delivery, went through the pain of checking out and then waited days for the DVD to arrive, just so they could watch that speech and fist pump furiously.

It's also a bit weird to conflate a bloody 13th-century war with Alistair Darling and Alex Salmond's televised shout-off, but whatever ALBA GU BRAAAAATH!

The Better Together campaign got its very own William Wallace earlier in the year, when a "passionate highlander" in the Question Time audience delivered a rousing speech in favour of union.

Tangentially, what does Tennis star Andy Murray make of the referendum? He appeared to come out in favour of the Yes campaign early this morning, tweeting: "Huge day for Scotland today! no campaign negativity last few days totally swayed my view on it. excited to see the outcome. lets do this!"

Voting takes place all day today with a result expected early tomorrow, you can keep up with the action on our live blog.
