Oscars 2018: Frances McDormand uses acceptance speech to demand inclusion rider from Hollywood

The 2018 Oscars has come to its (rather staid) conclusion, with major wins for The Shape of Water, Darkest Hour, Three Billboards and Get Out.

This year's ceremony witnessed multiple political causes championed: from gun control to the plight of Dreamers children to the Time's Up and #MeToo movements.

Frances McDormand's powerful acceptance speech for Best Actress (apologies for the spoiler) calling for all female nominees to stand up and enforce 'inclusion riders' - will be the Oscars' answer to Oprah Winfrey at the Golden Globes.

"I want to get some perspective," she said. "If I may be so honoured to have all the female nominees in every category stand with me in this room tonight, the actors - Meryl, if you do it, everybody else will, c'mon - the filmmakers, the producers, the directors, the writers, the cinematographer, the composers, the songwriters, the designers. C'mon!"

"Okay, look around everybody," she continued. "Look around, ladies and gentlemen, because we all have stories to tell and projects we need financed. Don't talk to us about it at the parties tonight.

"Invite us into your office in a couple days, or you can come to ours, whatever suits you best, and we'll tell you all about them. I have two words to leave with you tonight, ladies and gentlemen: inclusion rider".

The Shape of Water was the bookies' favourite and came away with the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director, with Guillermo Del Toro making a cheeky dig at last year's Best Picture disaster by checking the envelope twice to make sure it had the right winner.

The acting categories frontrunners – Gary Oldman for best actor, Frances McDormand for Best Actress, Sam Rockwell for Supporting Actor, and Allison Janney for Supporting Actress – all came to fruition.

Confirmed performers at tonight's ceremony include Common, Mary J. Blige, Gael García Bernal, Andra Day, Natalia LaFourcade, Miguel, Keala Settle and Sufjan Stevens.

Mary J. Blige will play "Mighty River”, written for Mudbound. Gael García Bernal, Miguel, and Natalia LaFourcade will perform “Remember Me” from Coco, while Keala Settle sings The Greatest Showman standout "This Is Me”. 

Common and Andra Day will perform "Stand Up for Something” from the biopic Marshall, and finally Sufjan Stevens will play the heartbreaking “Mysteries of Love” form Call Me By Your Name.

Many people suspect either Three Billboards or The Shape of Water will take home the night's top prize. However, there's been some groundswell around Get Out, Jordan Peele's horror that reached cinemas an eternity ago (read: over a year ago). Last night (3 March), the film won the Independent Spirit Award for best picture - for the last four years running, the winner of that award has won the Oscar for best picture. With so much anticipation around the tiny-budget film, chances are Get Out could steal the night.

A selection of the Brits hoping to take home awards tonight: Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour), and Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread).

Fun fact: supporting actress nominee Manville and leading actor nominee Oldman were once married and have a son named Alfie. Unfortunately, it's not quite the former spousal showdown we saw in 2009, when both Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) and James Cameron (Avatar) were nominated for the same award, best director - Bigelow famously won that battle.

Some predictions from me (Jack Shepherd) before I leave you in the hands of Christopher Hooton and the rest of the Oscars team: after believing for months Shape of Water had the best picture gong in the bag, I rewatched the film last night and have changed my mind. It's special, and one of Guillermo's finest hours (he'll no doubt take best director), but I reckon Get Out could clinch a victory.

Personally, I'd like to see Phantom Thread win - Paul Thomas Anderson has created a masterpiece and perhaps. Daniel Day-Lewis would also be a great choice for best actor, although Daniel Kaluuya's great in Get Out and Oldman seems unbeatable for Darkest Hour (though none of us are huge fans of the film here).

Allison Janney has arrived on the red carpet wearing an eye-popping scarlet gown by Reem Acra paired with a Roger Vivier clutch. The I,Tonya star has already taken home the gong for best supporting actress at the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs. Will tonight mark a hat-trick for the US actress? Stay tuned.
