'I don’t want to live in a country where people voted for Trump. I want to live in some other f*cking country'

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Michael Shannon is the kind of man who never holds back: not in his views on his own movies, his fashion choices, or his political beliefs.
The actor is currently busy promoting his new film Nocturnal Animals, though - like many of us - it's hard for his thoughts not to drift towards the election and to a future with President Donald Trump, and he had some very harsh words to direct at his supporters.
"The wall isn’t between the U.S. and Mexico," Shannon told Metro News. "The wall is between people who voted for Trump and people who didn’t. And we’ve got to do something about it. I don’t want to live in a country where people voted for Trump. I want to live in some other f*cking country. But I don’t want to run away. So we’re just going to have to bust this thing up."
"There’s a lot of old people who need to realize they’ve had a nice life," he continued. "And it’s time for them to move on. Because they’re the ones who go out and vote for these assholes. If you look at the young people, between 18 and 25, if it was up to them Hillary would have been president. No offense to the seniors out there. My mom’s a senior citizen. But if you’re voting for Trump, it’s time for the urn."
When the interviewer confessed their parents had voted for Trump; Shannon swiftly responded, "F*ck ’em. You’re an orphan now. Don’t go home. Don’t go home for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Don’t talk to them at all. Silence speaks volumes."
Shannon stars alongside Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal and Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Nocturnal Animals; the psychological thriller which sees a Los Angeles art dealer receive an unsolicited package from her ex-husband, containing a disturbingly violent novel dedicated to her.
Nocturnal Animals is in UK cinemas now.
