Jennifer Lawrence has made a statement clarifying her political views after she was quoted saying she used to be “a little Republican”.

The Hunger Games actor made headlines last week after she revealed she voted for John McCain in the 2008 presidential election when he ran against Barack Obama.

She added that the election of Donald Trump “changed everything” in regards to her understanding of the Republican party, saying: “This is an impeached president who’s broken many laws and has refused to condemn white supremacy, and it feels like there’s been a line drawn in the sand, and I don’t give a f*** – that’s just the bottom line.”

On Tuesday (27 October), Lawrence explained via Twitter: “I would like to clarify my voting record which is the subject of many circulating headlines.

“I grew up in a Republican family and voted for John McCain in 2008, but through Obama’s presidency, and growing up to realise I was voting against my own rights, I am proud to say I am a Democrat.”

Lawrence will soon star with Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep and Timothee Chalamet in the satirical comedy Don’t Look Up, following an acting hiatus.

She spent the time working with the bipartisan organisation RepresentUs, which aims to take corruption out of politics.
