Eddie Redmayne has won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama), for his portrayal of physicist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything .
Redmayne beat his fellow British actors Benedict Cumberbatch and David Oyelowo in a category dominated by biopics.
In The Imitation Game , Cumberbatch portrays Alan Turing, the computing pioneer who broke the Enigma code during World War Two, but was later persecuted by the British authorities for his homosexuality.
In Selma , a drama depicting the 1965 voting rights marches in Alabama, Oyelowo plays the celebrated US civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.

The side details on this Versace dress come adorned with bling, naturally. And no-one wears a white dress on a red carpet better than Ms Hudson.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Amal Alamuddin in Dior couture The first major red carpet dress for the new Mrs Clooney, Amal Alamuddin opted for a classic dress from Dior couture. It's classy understated but those white gloves were an odd choice of accessory.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Lupita Nyong'o in Giambattista Valli Lupita was last year's red carpet winner, she went all out in this Giambattista Valli couture gown. But unlike last season where she commanded the red carpet, this dress seems to wear her.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Joanne Froggatt in Marchesa Joanne Froggatt looks every inch the award winner in this gown by Marchesa. A classic red carpet shape with abit of signature Marchesa glitz thrown in for good measure.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Katie Holmes in Marchesa A bit of a disappointing dress from Katie Holmes, the plum colour is great on her and whilst the dress shape is perfectly nice, the overall effect is a little boring. The hair and makeup however Katie nails.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Reese Witherspoon in Calvin Klein Reese Witherspoon shows off her veteran red carpet status in this strapless shimmer gown by Calvin Klein. The colour and shape of the gown plus the old school Hollywood hair and makeup are exactly right.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Julianne Moore in Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci Fellow attendees take note from this master class in red carpet dressing. Julianne can do no wrong, this Givenchy gown, custom-made of course, has it all; bling, feathers, sparkle.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad Jennifer Lopez doing what Jennifer Lopez does best. Classic JLo hair and makeup teamed with a characteristically spectacular dress.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Kate Beckinsale in Elie Saab A pretty dress from Elie Saab for Kate Beckinsale. The embellishment on the top of this design saves the look as pale colours like grey and nude in real life look amazing but in pictures tend to end up looking a little drab.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Heidi Klum in Versace Red carpet glamour nailed by Heidi Klum in this red Versace dress. The colour, the one shoulder detail and draped bodice is all perfection.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Jennifer Aniston in Saint Laurent Jennifer Aniston unsurprisingly went down the black dress angle. She chose a dress by Saint Laurent with sequinned neckline and thigh high split.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Salma Hayek in Alexander McQueen Salma Hayek looks dare I say it, a little bit bridal in this white Alexander McQueen gown, the belt saves the look adding a much needed modern detail.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Sienna Miller in Miu Miu Sienna Miller opted for a plunging neckline gown by Miu Miu. The embroidery is a nice added touch that makes this look, as expected from this style icon, just a little bit different from your bog standard red carpet dresses.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Anna Kendrick in Monique Lhuillier A very big dress for a rather little lady, the colour and pattern are lovely but the whole dress is perhaps just a little too voluminous, overwhelming Anna somewhat.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Naomi Watts in Gucci It’s always nice to see colour on the red carpet and the yellow of Naomi’s Gucci gown provides a great pop of colour, however the whole look is rather overshadowed by her spectacular Bulgari snake necklace.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Diane Kruger in Emilia Wickstead Diane Kruger opted for a gown from British designer Emilia Wickstead. Diane never gets it wrong, the key to her style is keeping things simple, the shift shape and silver hue are effortlessly stylish.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Allison Williams in Armani Prive Allison Williams chose a bright red ruffled gown by Armani Prive. Amongst a sea of red gowns it's nice to see this one with a little added detail.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Dakota Johnson in Chanel Dakota Johnson is a million miles from her drab Fifty Shades of Grey alter ego Anastasia Steele, she channels a disco ball (rather well I might add) in this silver strapless look by Chanel.

In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Amy Adams in Versace A one shoulder gown in a soft powder blue makes for a very pretty gown with the draping adding some detail, but it’s a safe choice for Amy and won’t be winning any awards.

In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Rosamund Pike in Vera Wang Where has Rosamund the English rose gone? This dress would be risqué in any environment, on a red carpet it’s rather raunchy.

In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Jessica Chastain in Atelier Versace Jessica Chastain opted for a plunging neckline gown by Atelier Versace. The bronze high-shine colour is an odd choice, perhaps she channeling the Golden Globe she was hoping to win.

In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Felicity Jones in Christian Dior Felicity Jones looks every inch the Hollywood star in this princess dress. From the high neckline to the jewel tone teal colour, this dress is a class act.

In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Catherine Zeta Jones in Angel Sanchez Catherine Zeta Jones went for a classic strapless red dress that is perfectly nice, but is by no means groundbreaking. Amusing comparisons have been drawn with the famous dancing lady emoticon.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Emily Blunt in Michael Kors Emily Blunt channels a Grecian goddess in this white dress which was custom made for her by Michael Kors. The combination of the dress and an equally Grecian hairstyle may just push her slightly into the fancy dress category.

In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Jane Fonda in Versace This is a very sexy dress which is worn rather well by 77 year old Jane Fonda. Bright red, figure hugging and even a side cut-out detail .
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Lorde in Narciso Rodriguez Lorde makes a daring choice in a Narciso Rodriguez suit, great to see a breakaway from the normal red carpet gowns, if only this was a little more fitted.

In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Emma Stone in Lanvin Emma Stone breaks the mould in a Lanvin jumpsuit. Not wearing a dress is a risk at an event like this but the combination of the embellishment of the top half of this with the caped back makes it work.
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Viola Davis in Donna Karan Wearing red on the red carpet is a fail-safe option. Add to that the dramatic train on Viola’s Donna Karan gown and you’re onto a winner.

In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Kerry Washington in Mary Katrantzou Kerry Washington is flying the flag for London Fashion Week favourite Mary Katrantzou in a pink and navy gown. It’s a classic shape but with a hint of Katrantzou’s iconic prints.

In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Melissa McCarthy in a custom dress Monochrome is a timeless colour combination. A half tuxedo, half dress creation however is not. The bow tie is a nice added detail to this look that Melissa made herself!

In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Ruth Wilson in Prada Mossy green is not an easy colour to wear on the red carpet, but Ruth pulls it off in this Prada shift dress complete with contrast stitching detail.

In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Uzo Aduba A sequin halter neck number for Uzo, on closer observation the intricate multi-colour beading detail on this dress is quite amazing.

In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Keira Knightley in Chanel Keira Knightley likes to think outside the box when it comes to the red carpet, this custom made dress by Chanel isn't to everyone's taste but with its feather embroidery, it's a thing of beauty.
Getty
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Claire Danes in Valentino Rather dark for the red carpet but this is another gown where the devil is in the detail. Feathers make up this rather spectacular Valentino look.
Getty
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Lena Dunham in Zac Posen Possibly the best Lena has ever looked, a bright red gown with draped back and asymmetric hemline. Flattering and fashion forward.
Getty
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Taylor Schilling in Ralph Lauren Another red gown, the bottom half of this gown is great, the top half with a peekaboo neckline let's it down.
Getty
In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Michelle Monaghan in Jason Wu Michelle perfectly channels 90s glam-rock (think Kate Moss) in this beaded slip dress by Jason Wu.

In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Maggie Gyllenhaal in Miu Miu Eek we love Maggie and we love Miu Miu, but this gown is not just the wrong colour but also a little ill-fitting on Maggie.

In pictures: Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet Gwyneth Paltrow in Michael Kors Gwyneth Paltrow skipped the red carpet and instead went straight to presenting duties. For the occasion Gwyneth wore a bright pink plunging neckline gown by Michael Kors. It's difficult to assess this gown without the full length visual but the pink colour is a nice shade from the prevalent reds and silvers dominating this year's Golden Globe awards
Redmayne described the experience of making the film as a “huge privilege”, saying: “The Hawking family allowed us into their lives and they trusted us with their story. And getting to spend time with Stephen Hawking, who, despite all of the obstacles put in his way has lived passionately and fully and with great humour, was one of the great honours of my life.”
All three British actors are hotly tipped for Oscar nominations when the Academy unveils its own awards shortlists later this week.
Michael Keaton, who took home the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical, for his performance in Birdman , is also favoured to feature in the Best Actor category at the Oscars.
