Two television phenomena are set to collide with the creator of The Walking Dead set to adapt material long cited as the inspiration behind George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series into a brand new TV show.

Chronicles of Amber, reports The Hollywood Reporter, will be the next project from Robert Kirkman and Skybound Entertainment who are also behind popular AMC shows The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead and Cinemax's Outcast.

The globally-successful fantasy collection from author Roger Zelazny follows Corwin, a man who - after awakening on earth with no memory - swiftly learns he is royalty with the ability to travel through different dimensions.

With the initial book released in 1970, Chronicles of Amber saw ten follow-ups up until 1991; the series was told in two different arcs, one named The Corwin Cycle and the other The Merlin Cycle.

Game of Thrones author Martin previously named Zelazny as one of his key inspirations. He described him as a "storyteller without peer [who created] worlds as colourful and exotic and memorable as any our genre has ever seen" following his passing in 1995.

With Thrones gearing up for an ending in 2018, premium cable network HBO has lined up another fantasy epic in the form of sci-fi western Westworld which is set to premiere this October.
