Bafta winner lined up for Stone Roses reunion film

A celebrated filmmaker known for his gritty insights into British urban culture is to document one of the year's most high-profile musical reunions, The Independent can reveal.

Shane Meadows, a writer and director whose films include This is England and Dead Man's Shoes, is in discussions to document the reunion of the Stone Roses, a source close to the band has confirmed. Speculation over the project emerged after Meadows was seen at the group's high-profile press conference last week, where they announced their reunion. Industry sources have confirmed the commission, although the band have said a decision is due in the next few weeks.

If Meadows's proposals get the green light, it will be a rare departure into non-fiction filmmaking for the Staffordshire-born director, who has won acclaim for his dark dramas. This is England, starring Thomas Turgoose, about a young boy falling under the influence of a group of skinheads in 1980s England, won a Bafta in 2006.

The Stone Roses' reunion concerts have been among the most keenly received – and fastest selling – in recent years.

On Wednesday afternoon, Sheffield's Warp Films confirmed to The Independent that it is producing the project.
