Actor Antonio Banderas has tested positive for coronavirus.

The Spanish actor, who is best known for roles in The Mask of Zorro and Once Upon a Time in Mexico, tweeted that he was spending his 60th birthday today (10 August) in quarantine after testing positive for Covid-19.

“Greetings to all,” Banderas wrote. “I want to make a public statement that today, 10 August, I’m forced to celebrate my 60th birthday in quarantine after having tested positive for the Covid-19 illness, caused by coronavirus.

“I would like to add that I am feeling relatively well, just a little more tired than usual, and I am confident I will recover as soon as possible following the doctor’s instructions, which I hope will allow me to overcome the infection that I and so many people around the world are suffering from.”

The actor explained that he would be using his time in isolation “to read, write, rest and to continue to make plans to give meaningfulness to my recently started 60th year, to which I have arrived filled with desire and enthusiasm.

“A strong hug to everyone,” he signed off the post.

Celebrities including Tom Hanks and Idris Elba have previously tested positive for and recovered from the virus.
