THE SIXTH SENSE (15)

The famous twist may be foolish (anti-clockwise, if anything) but the film still upholds its atmosphere of calm macabre. And Haley Joel Osmet as Cole is really something - he looks as though he were born wearing his dead father's tie. Terrific stuff.

THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (15) It brings to mind Eliot's line in The Waste Land: "At my back in a cold blast I hear/ The rattle of bones, and a chuckle spread from ear to ear ..." A meditation on exposure and voyeurism that belongs with the likes of Rear Window.

BOWFINGER (12)

Steve Martin stars as a no-hope director who casts Hollywood superstar Eddie Murphy in an alien invasion flick called Chubby Rain. Martin's script and performance confirm a return to form.
