Album: Chopin, Cello Music/ Andreas Brantelid (EMI)
Chopin's anniversary avalanche is already in full swing, with this disc by Sweden's highest-flying young cellist leading the field in that instrument.
Sonata Op 65 is a late work whose painful gestation can be sensed in its Schubertian first movement, to which Brantelid brings a restrained but noble expressiveness, with Marianna Shirinyan's finely shaded pianism the perfect complement. The Piano Trio in G minor, written when Chopin was 18, exudes charm; the "Grand Duo" conjures up an elegant scene.
