THE MAN WHO NEVER WAS: FREUDIAN TALES by Janet Sayers, Chatto and Windus £15.99

Mistaking a man for a "phallus, monster, or idol" can, apparently, happen to the best of us. But for anyone developing delusions of this kind (particularly embarrassing at work), Janet Sayer's collection of 15 case histories probably won't be any more helpful than the latest issue of Cosmopolitan or Marie Claire. The Pervert, Wimp and Penis-Envier of her interviews do little to illuminate the human psyche - the Tough Guy paints his BMW maroon "to be different from the crowd", Don Juan likes to seduce women - and are more likely to send readers back to the bosom of Irma Kurtz than to the magnum opus of Sigmund Freud.
