On Saturday, January 29, Arte Fiera Art First's Art White Night will invade the historical city of Bologna with contemporary art installations. Local museums, shops and art galleries will also keep their doors open until midnight.

The Emperor's Private Paradise: Treasures from the Forbidden City

More than 90 lavish objects are displayed, including murals, paintings, furniture, decorative works, and architecture from the two-acre residence and gardens of the Qianlong Emperor of China's last dynasty, created in 1771 and shuttered in 1924. Objects of lacquer, porcelain and gilt bronzes - never before seen by the public - are part of a larger show, the Summer of Chin a, including Extravagant Display: Chinese Art in the 18th and 19th Centuries. Organized by Peabody Essex Museum in Massachusetts, it travels to Milwaukee in June before returning to the Palace Museum in Beijing.

The Affordable Art Fair (AAF) will call Milan home in February, attracting more than 60 galleries from Italy and abroad. The fair aims to bring contemporary art to art lovers and collectors at affordable prices (all artwork is priced from €100 to €5,000). Launched in London in 1999, the fair is now held in locations around the world including Bristol, Amsterdam, Paris, New York, Sydney, Melbourne, Brussels, and Singapore. More than 9,000 visitors are expected to attend the first Milan edition of AAF.

59th Perth International Arts Festival

The Perth International Arts Festival is the longest-running multi-arts festival in Australia. While attendance is slightly lower than at NSW's iconic Sydney Festival, the Perth International Arts Festival offers a more varied program. The three-week-long event welcomes more than 800 performers and boasts a diverse program of art, music, theater, dance, literature and film. More than 800,000 people attended the festival in 2010.

Frank Lloyd Wright: Organic Architecture for the 21st Century

Timed to mark the centennial of Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright's home, studio and school in Wisconsin, this survey of the architect's major projects includes Unity Temple, Fallingwater home and the Johnson Wax building. Highlights feature never-before-exhibited drawings, furniture, photography and work related to Taliesin and his Arizona home, Taliesin West. The first exhibition to consider the relevance of Wright's architecture to today's environmentalism.

Around 180,000 visitors will travel to the festival to view cutting-edge contemporary works. Twelve of the fair's 160 galleries hail from Russia in 2011 as part of the event's FOCUS RUSSIA program. Other noteworthy Spanish art events include PHotoEspaña, ArtFutura, Loop and Swab.

39th Hong Kong Arts Festival

The region's largest annual arts gathering will feature more than 200 performances and events in 35 venues over 39 days, while showcasing the work of 54 performing groups from overseas and Hong Kong. Among them will be the Leipzig Opera, the Hallé Orchestra, the Basel Chamber Orchestra, Hong Kong's own Philharmonic Orchestra, Sinfonietta and Chinese Orchestra, plus singer-songwriters Marianne Faithfull and Elvis Costello.

Paul Gauguin: Maker of Myth

Paul Gauguin's colorful images of Brittany and the South Seas' islands are presented in this exhibit of 120 works, organized by the Tate Modern of London. The first major show in the US of the French artist since a 1988 retrospective, featuring self-portraits, still lifes and landscapes, paintings, pastels, sculpture, and decorated objects. The show explores Gauguin's use of myth and symbol to tell stories, from European culture to Maori legend.

Sydney celebrates contemporary art with a month long festival of exhibitions, late night openings, free public talks, behind-the-scenes tours and special events. More than 70 galleries across the city will take part in the event. Like LA Arts Month, Arts Month San Diego, and New York Gallery Week, the event aims to promote local galleries and artists. It also aspires to encourage people to make gallery-going a regular activity in their schedules.

Armory Arts Week has been running for 12 years and draws a healthy crowd of around 60,000 international and local visitors. Concurrent art fairs in 2010 included the ADAA Art Show, Volta NY, Independent, Pulse, Scope, Dutch Art Now, Red Dot, Fountain, Pool, Korean Art show and Verge.
