Election 2017: The worst gaffes to make you laugh, cringe and maybe cry
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Every election campaign has its fair share of gaffes for the voters to rue or enjoy. Considering how this year’s election was sprung upon the public and political parties, it’s no surprise the 2017 edition has plenty to look back on.
As parties scrabbled together their manifestos and policies rather hastily, scrutiny was inevitably placed on how each idea would be funded. Step forward excruciating interviews with Jeremy Corbyn on BBC’s Woman’s Hour and Diane Abbott on LBC.
Some politicians were also entering the fray of their first campaign as leader, which led to some intense examination of Tim Farron’s views on gay sex and Theresa May’s ‘naughty’ bucolic frolics. Even Paul Nuttall was confused by his opposition, calling Leanne Wood ‘Natalie’ twice during the ITV Debate.
For these and more, watch the video above to reminisce or despair at what were the worst gaffes of the 2017 general election.
