Hotel Review: Fraser Suites, Edinburgh
On a quiet side street at the top of the Royal Mile, this large Victorian building, formerly offices, has been converted into 75 good-value contemporary apartments with high ceilings, a light style and simple kitchenettes. Some have sofa beds, most have city views, plus there's a 24-hour gym.

OUR REVIEW
THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
In a quiet street tucked off the Royal Mile, it's a hop and a skip from the castle and a quick, albeit stiff, uphill climb from Waverley station. All the attractions of the Old Town - castle, cathedral, Scotch Whisky Experience, Museum of Scotland - are within easy strolling distance while the New Town is a 15-minute walk.
By car: around 1 hour from Glasgow, 2 hours 40 minutes from Newcastle and around 4 hours 20 from Manchester.
By train: 50 minutes from Glasgow Queens Street, 3 hours from Manchester Picadilly and 4 hours 45 minutes from London Kings Cross. A taxi from Edinburgh Waverley station takes five minutes. Book trains to Edinburgh.
By plane: Edinburgh Airport (30-minute drive).
THE LOOK AND FEEL
The late Victorian building, formerly Edinburgh City Council offices, is all high ceilings and tall windows. Set on a slope - like many Old Town buildings - the entrance floor, confusingly, is floor three, with the apartments spread over seven floors in total. Apart from the oak staircase and occasional bit of cornicing, not many original features are obvious, though all apartments benefit from the high ceilings and city views.
THE FACILITIES
There's a useful self-service launderette, or chargeable laundry service if you prefer, while a digital concierge, accessed through a QR code has information on restaurants, shops and attractions. For active types there's a 24-hour gym. The large reception area and lounge has a complimentary coffee machine.

The apartments, all with a kitchenette - simple fridge and microwave in the deluxe rooms to electric hob and dishwasher in the higher categories - share the same simple, contemporary style of neutral colours, black lacquer furniture, good storage and sofa beds in the larger rooms. Bathrooms are bright and spacious, most with bath as well as shower.

FOOD AND DRINK
The on-site, though separately run, café-bar, August 37, offers simple continental breakfast - croissants, cheese, meats - and a basic all-day menu of burgers and rolls. However, we'd advise exploring other options in and around the Royal Mile, such as hearty Scottish-flavoured dishes at Luckenbooths or Howies, Scottish-Asian at Wedgwood the Restaurant and romantic fine dining at The Witchery by the Castle.
AUGUST37: restaurant next-door serving breakfasts, burgers and cocktails. Open daily 8-10am and 12pm 'til late.
