This hotel is only a five-minute walk from the main concourse and therefore ideal if you arrive after a late flight, or need to leave early for a morning departure. Major sights like the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House area are around 30 minutes by bus and tram.

By plane: direct flights from London and Manchester take around 1 hour 15 minutes. The hotel is a 5-minute walk from Schiphol airport. Book flights to Amsterdam.

The design is very similar to other CitizenM hotels, with bright red being used a lot (for example bright red bottles displayed above the bar). Guest rooms are compact, contemporary and pod-like, with hi-tech controls for heating, lighting etc. Public areas are spacious and have designer furniture and large tables for meals and working, displays of vintage telephones, radios and cameras, and shelving with TVs, ornaments, games and books. The lobby area has several meeting rooms, a workstation area with computers and a printer, and a couple of old typewriters for good measure.

This isn't a hotel crammed with facilities - there is no spa or fitness centre, for example. Guests check themselves in by computer, however friendly staff are always at hand to help out if needed. There are 24-hour snacks and drinks available in addition to those at the bar.

Rooms expertly cram a lot into a relatively small space and look out onto cargo plane crates, or, if higher up, the runway. There's a large, comfortable bed, work area and bright red chair, storage space, safe and refrigerator, the latter three hidden away. The basin, unusually, is outside the shower room, which has a frosted glass door, light grey plastic walls and white flooring, giving a space-age feel.

Breakfast is nicely presented and there is a good choice, such as yoghurts, bacon and cooked tomatoes, cheeses and yoghurts, croissants and bread rolls. There's a good variety of meals for later in the day, such as pearl barley risotto, salads and sushi.
