OVERVIEW

Sitting a popped champagne cork away from the Thames, this upmarket French-influenced hotel occupies a former brewery. The public areas have oodles of personality, the guestrooms are designed to linger in, and the bistro serves quality food. Service is slick and the décor is full of character.

OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Henley-on-Thames roars to life each summer when the Royal Regatta takes place, but the riverside town is an enjoyable destination to visit at any time, with an unhurried feel and handsome, half-timbered buildings. It's also on the fringe of the Chiltern Hills AONB, and is close to both the town centre and the railway station. Key attractions include the Chiltern Valley Winery & Brewery, and National Trust properties Greys Court and Nuffield Place.

By car: The hotel is 40 mins from Oxford, around 1 hour 10 mins from London and 1 hour 45 mins from Birmingham. There is limited parking at the hotel costing £15 per day (booking recommended).

By train: London Paddington to Henley-on-Thames (via Twyford) takes around 1 hour. The station is 10 minutes' walk or a short cab ride away from the hotel. Book trains to Henley-on-Thames.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The hotel has bold industrial remnants everywhere you look, from pulleys and girders to iron staircases, which makes the property feel like more than just another fancy hotel. You'd hardly mistake it for a factory, though - the designers have done a fine job of packing the place with stylish comforts.

THE FACILITIES

You know what you're getting with a brand like Hotel du Vin: neatly dressed staff with well-oiled service levels and a can-do attitude. Other than the bistro, a champagne bar and a snug 'cigar bothy', there are no extra facilities of note - although it does offer a same-day laundry service.

FOOD AND DRINK

The Bistro du Vin is a hop-garlanded space full of pillars and antique mirrors - an atmospheric spot to enjoy a partly French-influenced menu that features the likes of cassoulet, sole meunière and beef provençale. If you're in the mood, there's even a four-course tasting menu with paired wines.

Bistro du Vin: relaxed dining, classic French cuisine, specials, set menu and à la carte, Sunday roasts. Open every day for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Mains from £12.50.
