OVERVIEW

Tenerife's associated with beach holidays, but its capital is ideal for a long weekend of a city stay. Its small-yet-perfectly-formed centre is easily explored on foot. The most foodie-friendly of all the Canaries, there are three restaurants in the Michelin Guide within walking distance of the hotel.

OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Located in the heart of the city, with pretty Parque García Sanabria nearby. Salamanca-born chef Raúl Santos Pablo imaginatively fuses classic Castilian cuisine with Japanese fare at just-around-the-corner Sagrario, a Michelin Guide entry.

By plane: flights from London, Birmingham and Manchester to Tenerife take around 4 hours 30 mins. The hotel is a 45-minute taxi ride from Tenerife South airport. Book flights to Tenerife.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Looks can be deceptive as the Occidental Santa Cruz Contemporáneo appears to be older than its 1989 birthdate. A business-meets-leisure hotel, the hotel feels both formal enough for a convention and welcoming enough for a weekend away. Its privileged Rambla de Santa Cruz address adds further cachet to its appeal.

THE FACILITIES

Service is attentive at Occidental Santa Contemporáneo from staff who are as warm as the island's celebrated climate. The rooftop pool and sun terrace are a boon to top up your Vitamin D intake. The hotel is light on facilities, but its proximity to Tenerife's capital attractions is its biggest plus.

BED AND BATH

Single rooms, at 12 square metres, are ideal for solo business travellers or holidaymakers. Standard doubles offer an extra four metres and are similarly low-key in terms of decoration. White walls and wooden floors seem an exercise in Scandinavian minimalism. Chunky sinks and walk-in showers make up a functional bathroom.

The Café Bar & Lounge Macusamba start their á-la-carte breakfast at 9am; it ends at midday. They also offer classic cocktails, local wines, lunch, and dinner.
