OVERVIEW

La Laguna Gran Hotel was once on Calle del Agua, named after the canals powering the mills. The street was rechristened Calle Nava y Grimon in honour of the 18th-century manor house repurposed as the hotel's front. Explore the cobbled centre of San Cristóbal de La Laguna from its doorstep.

OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

UNESCO has declared the historical centre of San Cristóbal de La Laguna a World Heritage Site, and La Laguna Gran Hotel is positioned slap-bang in the middle of it all. From Tenerife South airport, you can reach the hotel in around three-quarters of an hour in a hire car. The 99 steps of the Iglesia de la Concepción allow you to survey the city's origin story, its former lagoon.

By plane: flights from London, Birmingham and Manchester to Tenerife take around 4 hours 30 mins. The hotel is a 45-minute taxi ride from Tenerife South Airport. Parking on-site is €9 per day. Book flights to Tenerife.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The beautifully-preserved interior courtyard of the erstwhile manor house functions as the hotel's stylish reception; a verdant garden surrounds an artfully-constructed and tasteful extension housing the main restaurant and transparent lifts connecting the ground floor with rooftop pool and solarium.

THE FACILITIES

Staff greet you like long-lost friends on arrival even if you are not making a return visit (although many guests do). There's 24-hour parking and room service too. Head to the rooftop to sunbathe overlooking the Aguere Valley and more distant Anaga Mountains. There's a bijou pool and a gym.

BED AND BATH

Less is more in bedrooms that mute colour with the sunlight adding nature's palette. There are Samsung Smart TVs in every room and a surround-sound loudspeaker system. The Deluxe with a terrace provides access to an area with a communal garden view. Grand Suite rooms stock Rituals toiletries in elegant bathrooms.

Room Types: Standard, Deluxe, Executive, Deluxe with Terrace, Noble, Junior Suite, Grand Suite, Royal Suite

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, hairdryer, TV, desk, Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

Laguna Café is the misleadingly informal name for the prim and proper lobby bar. The La Laguna Gran Hotel Restaurant offers a Canarian-meets-international buffet breakfast with superior coffee and a more experimental value-for-money three-course set dinner menu. Choose from al-fresco seating in the vertical garden or eating in the cosy interior.

Laguna Gran Hotel Restaurant: breakfast buffet with Canarian and international options; three-course set dinner menu.

Vinoteca: wine tastings, wine and food pairing sessions, takeaway.
