OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

The hotel is situated in the heart of the sleepy town of Santanyí, with its attractive sandstone buildings and cobbled streets. The liveliest it gets is on market days (Wednesdays and Saturdays) and there are several churches, a few shops, restaurants and cafés to explore. Mondragó nature reserve, with its hiking, bike trails and hidden coves is only four miles (6km) away, and various beaches are not far too. You'll probably not want to stray from the hotel, but Cassai Gran Cafe, a centuries-old building, easy-going Retroway Cafe and Es Moli for its paellas and vegan dishes are all worth a visit.

By plane: there are direct flights from London (2 hours 25 mins), Manchester (2 hours 40 mins) and Edinburgh (3 hours). The hotel is a 45-minute drive from Palma de Mallorca airport. Paid parking costs €30 per day. Book flights to Mallorca.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

This hotel has a delightful design aesthetic and ambience throughout. Many areas have been built using local stone, such as Santanyi stone, a beige limestone, and Marés stone, a sandstone. The pool is surrounded by cypress and olive trees, and stone arches, wooden beams and exposed stone walls abound.

THE FACILITIES

The service and facilities are outstanding here: the public areas are exquisite, whether the two restaurants and bar areas, the outdoor pool, spa facilities or the 24-hour gym with its sophisticated Technogym equipment. There's a romantic cobbled patio and a little 'library' lounge, with art books to flick through and a turntable and vinyl library to use. Bicycles are available to rent to explore the lovely surrounding countryside.

FOOD AND DRINK

Ocre restaurant is housed in a former wine cellar near the lobby and its light stone arched ceiling, wooden beams and wall panels create a warm ambience. Serving up a seasonal menu of sophisticated dishes using local produce, it has a bar area adjacent. There's also a less formal restaurant, La Frasca, and another bar area by the pool.

Ocre Restaurant & Bar: Mediterranean dishes include Majorcan black suckling pig and turbot. Open daily. Mains from €21.

La Frasca: Light lunches, pizza and fish. Open daily 'til 5pm. Mains from €16.
