5 Welsh summer festivals worth checking out
With events based on music and food – and even themed around monsters – Wales has a host of festivals for everyone
From dancing on the site of The Prisoner to a spot of bog snorkelling, here are five of the best festivals this summer has to offer...
Festival No.6
Named in tribute to the classic Sixties TV show The Prisoner (which was filmed in the event’s setting, the Gwynedd village of Portmeirion), Festival No.6 (festivalnumber6.com; 6-9 September) has performances by top bands, plus fine-dining evenings and street food.
Cragen sea monster tour
The mystery and mythology of the Welsh coast will come alive this summer via regular appearances on the waterfront (including at Aberystwyth on 12 August) of Cragen, a sea monster with a crucial ecological message — see cleanseascragen.wales for the complete schedule.
Cardigan Bay Seafood Festival
What started in 1997 as a way for fishermen to eulogise the joys of shellfish has become an annual party in Aberaeron, Ceredigion. A one-day affair, it revolves around cooking demonstrations from local chefs down at the harbourside (aberaeronfishfest.com; 8 July).
Abergavenny Food Festival
Further fine flavours well up in Monmouthshire over this tasty weekend (abergavennyfoodfestival.com; 15-16 September). Expect campfire cooking, foraging tours and a wealth of delicious offerings.
World Alternative Games
Llanwrtyd in Powys is the setting for madcap mayhem over three long weekends (11-13, 17-20, 24-27 August; worldalternativegames.com), via pursuits such as finger jousting, egg throwing and barrel rolling. Join in!
