Paul Allen, the former West Ham and Tottenham midfielder, has left Southampton after having his contract cancelled. Allen was put on the transfer list in the summer and has been playing with the First Division side Southend this season.

Hearts have completed the signing of Neil Pointon from Oldham. The fee for the former Everton and Manchester City defender has not yet been revealed.

Arie Haan, currently coaching PAOK Salonika in Greece, has agreed to succeed his former Dutch international team-mate, Wim van Hanegem, as the coach of Feyenoord.

Gillingham have bought the midfielder David Puttnam for pounds 30,000 from fellow Third Division team Lincoln City. The striker Steve Brown has moved in the opposite direction for pounds 20,000.
