Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Danny Cipriani will make his first England start in a decade as they look to avoid what would be a humiliating 3-0 whitewash series defeat against South Africa.

Having lost the first Test in Johannesburg and the second last week in Bloemfontein, England face one last chance to secure a victory against the Springboks at Cape Town’s Newlands Stadium in what has been a compelling Test series. Head coach Eddie Jones has elected to make a significant change at fly-half as Cipriani replaces George Ford – who doesn’t even make the replacements’ bench – while Joe Marler replaces Mako Vunipola and Nathan Hughes in for Billy Vunipola as the brothers have returned to the UK. The final change is illness-enforced as Brad Shields is replaced by Chris Robshaw.

South Africa have also made changes – five in total – as Chiliboy Ralepelle, Elton Jantjies, Andre Esterhuizen, Jesse Kriel, and Warrick Gelant all start, while Schalk Brits comes out of retirement for one last game as he is named on the bench.

England: Elliot Daly; Jonny May, Henry Slade, Owen Farrell, Mike Brown; Danny Cipriani, Ben Youngs; Joe Marler, Jamie George, Kyle Sinckler; Joe Launchbury, Maro Itoje; Chris Robshaw, Tom Curry, Nathan Hughes.

Replacements: Luke Cowan-Dickie, Alec Hepburn, Harry Williams, Jonny Hill, Mark Wilson, Sam Simmonds, Ben Spencer, Denny Solomona.

21 mins: De Klerk - yes the diminutive scrum-half, drives Nathan Hughes back all of 10 metres that lifts the crowd, and while Youngs is able to clear to touch, it lifts the stadium as the fans voice their approval of the hit.

22 mins: It's been a mistake-laden game so far, and after Mtawarira concedes a penalty for holding on, Farrell misses touch - only for Gelant to kick straight into touch. The game is there for either team to take.

Jack de Menezes23 June 2018 16:29

23 mins: The ball finally comes to Ciprian as he loops round Farrell to link with Daly and then Brown, and the wing bashes off Jantjies with a powerful hit, only for the fly-half to get back up and turn the ball over when it comes loose. That was the first time England showed a bit of flair through the hands and it certainly created some momentum.

27 mins: Daly cuts back and his evasiveness frees up the right side of the pitch. He finds Farrell who kicks across to May, and his run makes up 15 metres for England in a good attack. But Dyantyi intercepts, only to be trapped by Curry and concede the penalty for holding on.

Farrell turns down the kick at goal for the corner, but it's a horror kick from Daly as he misses touch and kicks dead. What a waste.

31 mins: South Africa break! May knocks the ball on and the Springboks go wide through Kriel. He passes to Nkosi, and he's one-on-one with Brown. Nkosi decides to chip ahead, but from nowhere May sweeps back in, collects the ball and outgasses Nkosi as he runs around the posts in his deadball zone and just kicks to touch. Great defensive work from May after that initial error, while Brown also did really well.

35 mins: England have another penalty when Ralepelle doesn't roll away after tackling Sinckler, and Farrell will this time go for goal to try and double the lead.

Jack de Menezes23 June 2018 16:43

36 mins: Farrell lands the kick and England lead 0-6.

Here's that mega-hit from De Klerk...

Jack de Menezes23 June 2018 16:45

38 mins: Hughes charges at the line before offloading in the tackle to Brown, who is on a delightful line with space in front. Kriel gets a crucial hand to the ball though that dislodges it and forces a knock-on, and the England wing is furious with himself as he knew that was a real chance.
