From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Great Britain women begin their campaign at the Tokyo Olympics against Chile with the Games underway in both the football and softball before Friday’s opening ceremony.

The women’s football competition gets under way with Great Britain taking on Chile in Sapporo at 8.30am BST (4.30pm in Japan). Kicking off in Tokyo at 9.30am BST will be the highly anticipated meeting between Sweden, who won silver in Rio losing to Germany in the final, and the reigning world champions USA.

The Games remains on course although the head of the organising committee Toshiro Muto refused to completely rule out a last-minute cancellation amid ongoing concern surrounding Covid-19. “At this point, the coronavirus cases may rise or fall, so we will think about what we should do when the situation arises.”

Great Britain 2-0 Chile

77 min: Team GB are pushing for more. Another nice move involving Bronze and Parris on the right sees the ball worked to Daly on the left. Her shot is well hit but straight at Endler, who makes the save. GB are knocking it around nicely and Chile are still yet to threaten.

Great Britain 2-0 Chile

88 min: Roebuck gives a huge shout of “keeper!” as she collects an aimless cross aimed into the box by Chile. The Manchester City goalkeeper has had a quiet afternoon but is likely to be given more of a test against Japan and Canada.

Jill Scott comes on as a late replacement for Caroline Weir.

HALF-TIME: Sweden 1-0 USA

In Tokyo, it’s half-time in the clash between Sweden and USA. At the moment, it’s going the same way as the 2016 Olympic quarter-final in Brazil, with Sweden leading at the break. USA, who didn’t trail for a single minute of their World Cup win in 2019, have an uphill battle in the second half against the dangerous Swedes.

Great Britain 2-0 Chile

90 min: The excellent Kim Little makes way for Ella Toone, as GB sees out the closing minutes of added time. Has Little been GB’s player of the match here?

FULL-TIME: Great Britain 2-0 Chile (White 17’, 71')

Job done. A comfortable opening win and a welcome three points for Team GB in their opening game of the Tokyo Olympics. Two goals from Ellen White, one in each half, earned the win. There were impressive performances all over the pitch, particularly from Kim Little and Lauren Hemp. Hege Riise’s side will face sterner tests against Japan and Canada, especially defensively, but a winning start was crucial in a tough group and they’ve done that here.

Kick-off! Sweden 1-0 USA

We’re off to Tokyo now for updates on the second half of the USA’s match against Sweden in Group G.

Sweden are leading through Stina Blackstenius’s goal in the 25th minute but USA have made two changes at the break, with Julie Ertz and Carli Lloyd coming on for Sam Mewis and Alex Morgan. Can the USA make a comeback in the second half?

Sweden 1-0 USA

48 min: Fridolina Rolfö gets forward and hits a drive from range over the bar. Sweden dominated the USA in terms of goal attempts in the opening 45 minutes, outshooting their opponents by 11 attempts to three.

Sweden 1-0 USA

51 min: Kelley O’Hara is back up after receiving a bit of treatment. The USA have yet to get going in this second half but Sweden are responsible for that. They’re keeping the ball very well and are intense in their press too in order to win it back.

GOAL! Sweden 2-0 USA (Blackstenius 54’)

Sweden double their lead! It comes from the second corner in succession for the Swedes, from the ball into the box Amanda Ilestedt rises highest and hits the post with a downward header, but Stina Blackstenius is hanging at the back post to volley the rebound high into the net. It’s a double for Blackstenius, who also scored in the win over the USA in 2016.
