From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Great Britain women begin their campaign at the Tokyo Olympics against Chile with the Games underway in both the football and softball before Friday’s opening ceremony.

The women’s football competition gets under way with Great Britain taking on Chile in Sapporo at 8.30am BST (4.30pm in Japan). Kicking off in Tokyo at 9.30am BST will be the highly anticipated meeting between Sweden, who won silver in Rio losing to Germany in the final, and the reigning world champions USA.

The Games remains on course although the head of the organising committee Toshiro Muto refused to completely rule out a last-minute cancellation amid ongoing concern surrounding Covid-19. “At this point, the coronavirus cases may rise or fall, so we will think about what we should do when the situation arises.”

Great Britain 1-0 Chile

54 mins: It should be 2-0! Georgia Stanway picks up the ball in the left channel just outside the box. She hits a low shot at goal that is spilled by Endler, and it looks like White has a certain tap in. Somehow the Chile players get back to make the clearance.

Brisbane to host 2032 Olympic Games

Brisbane has been confirmed as the host city for the 2032 Olympic Games at an International Olympic Committee session in Tokyo.

Australia’s Queensland capital was earmarked for selection in February as part of the IOC’s new preferred candidate model, designed to avoid expensive bidding wars for hosting rights, and has now been officially awarded the Games in a vote by IOC members.

The IOC said Brisbane’s bid made use of 84 per cent existing or temporary venues, although local officials have suggested that The Gabba cricket ground could be demolished and rebuilt to become the lead venue for the Games.

GOAL! Great Britain 2-0 Chile (White 71')

Double for White! It’s a brilliant finish. Lucy Bronze sets it up after she bursts past a defender on the right before clipping the ball to the back post. White takes it first time, swivelling to volley the ball past Endler. Breathing space for Team GB and an opening victory surely in the bag.
