The 32-year-old hails from Clara some 160 miles south of Royal Portrush across the border, and enjoyed a passionate and ferocious support from a partisan crowd who roared him home from start to finish amid one of the greatest atmospheres ever witnessed in Open history.
Only on the first hole did Lowry look in trouble as he began his round with a bogey, giving Tommy Fleetwood a sniff of a challenge, but from there on no one was able to get close to the Irishman and he eventually held off his English playing partner to claim a six-shot victory and spark wild celebrations on the 18th green.
Fleetwood clinched his joint-best finish in a major but rued what could have been after failing to take his chances early on, while Tony Finau rose through the leaderboard with a supreme par round of 71 in tdreadful conditions to take third place. Re-live the action below.

1st hole
Rickie Fowler (-8) is up next on the first, but oh no. He goes way right and into the out of bounds area. Justin Rose (-9) shows him how it's done and smacks it down the fairway.
2nd hole
Spieth (-8) has a chance to move to 8-under and takes it, a 10ft putt on the second rolls in.
1st hole
Rose (-9) reaches the front of the green with his second shot, Fowler's (-8) fourth reaches the back and comes within 10ft of the hole, he might just get away with a bogey here. Back on the tee the penultimate match gets started. Brooks Koepka (-9) takes an iron and nestles into the second cut grass to the left. JB Holmes (-10) throws the ball into the air and the wind takes it all the way to the left and out of bounds.
3rd hole
Spieth (-7) misses his putt for par on the third and drops a shot.
1st hole
Fowler (-6) drops not one but two shots as he completes the first hole with a double bogey.
7th hole
Justin Thomas (-8) makes his fourth birdie in five holes to move up the leaderboard. He's playing a blinder out there now.
1st hole
He comes the leader, Shane Lowry (-16) walks onto the tee and give him and thunderous applause, Tommy Fleetwood (-12) follows him down to what can only be classed as lukewarm cheers in comparison.
1st hole
Here they are, the finally pairing. Tommy Fleetwood (-12) and Shane Lowry (-16). The wind has picked up to over 20mph blowing from right to left, Fleetwood hits off first and piles on the pressure by hitting the fairway. The crowd wait with bated breath as Lowry tees off, there's a collective gasp as the ball heads left but it stays in play.
2nd hole
Lee Westwood (-8) responds well on the second after missing a short par putt on the first he makes birdie to go back to 8-under. Danny Willett joins him by making a birdie of his own.
1st hole
Back on the first Brooks Koepka (-8) falls back after missing his par putt to the left.
From the rough, Lowry (-16) finds the greenside bunker with his approach, Fleetwood (-12) sends his second in close to the hole. Could we see a two shot swing after the first?
3rd hole
Go on Lee! Westwood's out of position off the tee on the third hole so has to pitch it close. He gets it very close by chipping in from off the green to move to (-9).
4th hole
Jordan Spieth (-6) is moving the wrong way down the leaderboard. Another bogey on the fourth drops him down to 6-under.
1st hole
Lowry's (-16) in trouble on the first. He chips out of the bunker but the ball runs back to the front of the green leaving a long putt for par. Lowry takes it on but leaves it well short of the hole, a bit of nerves perhaps? The good news is that Fleetwood (-12) misses his birdie and makes par.
Lowry's tricky bogey putt falls and he gives a big fist pump, it could have been worse but the lead is cut to three. Lowry back to (-15).
2nd hole
Fleetwood's (-12) tee shot flies left off the second and into the thick stuff. Further up Koepka (-7) is in trouble, playing his fourth in to the green from the rough and leaving a challenging putt for par which he misses.
3rd hole
Rickie Fowler (-8) changes his fortunes, a double bogey on the first is followed by birdies at two and three, so he's back up to where he started the day.
2nd hole
Lowry (-15) just short of the bunker off the tee on the second. He tries for the green with his second shot but doesn't quite catch it and leaves it short on the green. A decent third shot means the birdie chance is still on.
4th hole
In the chasing pack, Lee Westwood (-9) makes a par on the fourth, as does Danny Willett (-8).
