From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Shane Lowry captured the imagination of his Irish fans with a stunning victory to win The Open Championship and clinch his first major title.

The 32-year-old hails from Clara some 160 miles south of Royal Portrush across the border, and enjoyed a passionate and ferocious support from a partisan crowd who roared him home from start to finish amid one of the greatest atmospheres ever witnessed in Open history.

Only on the first hole did Lowry look in trouble as he began his round with a bogey, giving Tommy Fleetwood a sniff of a challenge, but from there on no one was able to get close to the Irishman and he eventually held off his English playing partner to claim a six-shot victory and spark wild celebrations on the 18th green.

Fleetwood clinched his joint-best finish in a major but rued what could have been after failing to take his chances early on, while Tony Finau rose through the leaderboard with a supreme par round of 71 in tdreadful conditions to take third place. Re-live the action below.

10th hole

Doc Redman (-4) becomes the first man of the day to reach the 4-under mark after a glorious second shot finishes a couple of inches from the whole.

12th hole

Francesco Molinari (-2) holes his eagle attempt and moves two shots under par for the week. He's 4-under for the round.

2nd hole

McDowell (-3) misjudged his third shot and left himself with a long putt for birdie, he didn't get it but made par.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 11:53

18th hole

Kiradech Aphibarnrat (+1) joins Sharma, Turner and Bertasio as the players to birdie the last hole today. Three bogeys, five birdies and an eagle for Kiradech give him the lowest round of the day with a four under 67.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 11:57

1st hole

Patrick Reed (-4) and Justin Thomas (-4) get game number 27 underway. The wind has picked up to about 18mph off the first tee. Patrick Reed finds the long rough to the left with Thomas in the fairway.

4th hole

173 yards to the pin for G-Mac on the fourth, he doesn't get it that far but finds the green and will have a putt for birdie.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 12:10

4th hole

G-Mac's (-3) birdie putt doesn't trail to the left as he'd hoped so he settles for par.

14th hole

Molinari's (-2) approach to the 14th isn't the greatest so has has a long, long putt for a birdie. That putt is a poor one as well as Francesco leaves it about 6ft short.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 12:14

Most of the leaders have arrived at the course, Brooks Koepka is the latest to arrive with Tommy Fleetwood and Shane Lowry already here.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 12:16

11th hole

Doc Redman's (-3) solid run of form comes to a halt on the difficult par-4 11th. He makes his second bogey of the day.

3rd hole

After his birdie on two Tyrell Hatton (-4) fails to replicate the result on the third pulling the putt up shirt. In the previous group Justin Harding (-4) made a birdie two.

1st hole

From the rough Patrick Reed (-4) holes his putt from around 9-10ft for a par.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 12:22

Romain Langasque (-1) holed this beauty at the fourth. It's a good job too or else that ball was travelling miles:

Michael Jones21 July 2019 12:23

5th hole

Tom Lewis (-4) goes back-to-back with birdies on the fourth and fifth to move 4-under par, McDowell (-3) has to settle for a par.

There are more and more umbrellas being opened, the rain is coming down and the wind is picking up as predicted.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 12:30

4th hole

Tyrell Hatton (-5) makes it two birdies in four holes for the Englishman.

6th hole

McDowell (-3) is wide off the tee on the par-3 sixth. His chipped second shot comes in from the rough and finishes about a foot from the hole. Great recovery from G-Mac.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 12:37

2nd hole

Justin Thomas (-4) on the second green has a birdie putt. He hits it well but it hovers over the hole when it stops. Thomas waits but it doesn't drop.

7th hole

McDowell's (-3) third shot into the seventh hits the front edge of the green and rolls back into the fairway. Up and down for par needed now for G-Mac.
