Gregor Townsend knows his Scottish side will have to pull out all the stops to defeat and Ireland outift who have won 15 of their past 16 Tests at home and are beginning a new era under head coach Andy Farrell.
Wales have set the early running with fast start against Italy in Cardiff at lunchtime and both of these sides will want to join them in beginning with a win. Follow it live after the conclusion of Wales vs Italy:

Scotland reset their defence well, though, and drive Ireland back, with a hint of an overlap for Jacob Stockdale quickly shut down by Sean Maitland, who makes the right decision to bite in and tackle the wing.
Nick Haining then pounces on a moment of inaccuracy at the base as Conor Murray gets himself in a muddle, and is unfortunate that his teammates weren't quite as alive to the possibilities. Josh van der Flier forces him to hold on with his jackal, and Johnny Sexton kicks the ball into the corner for an Irish lineout.

Thrown to the tail by Rob Herring and James Ryan brings it down and begins to pulsate the maul, which gets a proper wiggle on and takes Ireland to within three metres of the Scottish line. Ireland then draw Scotland offside with a string of meaty forward carries, and that gives them the free play to go slightly wider...
TRY! And Johnny Sexton scoots over!
It is simply brilliant execution of a very clever play that allows Sexton to dash in. Murray sets a two-man pod of Cian Healy and Josh van der Flier and takes up a position behind them, with the ball popped up to the loosehead from the base, as if to set another ruck to then build off of.
Healy feigns his charge and instead pulls the ball back to Murray on the loop, who uses a superb dummy line from Jordan Larmour against the grain to pick his pass to his half-back partner, who is around the outside of Ali Price caught out of his comfort zone in space.
Sexton trots over untouched, and adds the conversion. Ireland into the lead.

Ireland show ambition to play from inside their own 22 from the restart, with Garry Ringrose trying to slither through a half-gap on the right. He's pulled down 35 metres from his own line, but a little fumble on the floor is well spotted by Mathieu Raynal, and Scotland will have the scrum feed with fine attacking position.

Which they do not get to use, of course, with the scrum going down twice. Raynal rules Cian Healy to be hinging on the second occasion, and Adam Hastings will have another go at the posts.
PENALTY! Ireland 7-6 Scotland
Adam Hastings strikes his penalty beautifully, and a touch of fade on the ball takes it through the uprights.

Caelan Doris is up and about on the touchline, which is good to see. He'll not take any more part in the game, however - so Stander to eight and O'Mahony in at six for the remainder, then.

Some really positive signs from Nick Haining in this first quarter, busy around the ruck, firm in the carry and now rising high with leg extended to claim a high ball impressively. Scotland then win a penalty as an Irishman is deemed to be off his feet at a ruck. Stuart Hogg's big boot pushes the ball deep into Scottish territory.
That's an even better kick than I thought - Scotland will set the lineout ten metres out!

Oh dear. Scotland make a proper mess of their maul set-up, wasting the attacking position. The transfer to Hamish Watson didn't quite work - he was on Platform 5 and the ball came in on Platform 15. A juggle and a fumble and a knock on. Ireland scrum.
