The striker is preparing to lead Sweden’s attack against the Republic of Ireland on Monday as the two teams begin their Euro 2016 campaigns in the Group E encounter at the Stade de France, but the subject of his future remains a hot topic among football fans across Europe.
34-year-old Ibrahimovic will leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the month when his contract expires, and he has been repeatedly linked with a move to Manchester United. The Independent understands that talks have taken place between Ibrahimovic and the Premier League club, but any move will be delayed until his PSG contract is up due to a £1m loyalty bonus in his current deal that prevents him from signing for anyone else until 1 July or risk losing the lucrative payment.
Speaking ahead of Sweden’s opening Euro 2016 encounter, Ibrahimovic again noted the interest from United, but refused to elaborate on the talks or whether he has agreed to join the club now managed by Jose Mourinho.
"For me, with Manchester [United], there is nothing to say. I feel happy for the moment,” he said.
"What the future will be, you will know soon. But I enjoy football. Wherever I go I will be the same person and I will enjoy."
Ibrahimovic has also been linked with a return to AC Milan, but a move to Old Trafford to link up with Mourinho – the manager he played under at Inter Milan – appears to be the favoured option, given Ibrahimovic is yet to play in the Premier League.
A reported £250,000-a-week contract has been offered to the Sweden international on a 12-month deal, with the option of an extra year available should he wish to stay with the club for the 2017/18 season. One potential hurdle in negotiations is Ibrahimovic’s reported desire to play at this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio, which would not only rule him out of United’s lucrative pre-season tour of China but also the opening match of the Premier League season, with the Olympics ending a week after the opening weekend.
With Ibrahimovic due an extended holiday regardless of his Olympic commitments due to his participation at Euro 2016, it could be some time before the former Malmo, Ajax and Barcelona forward is seen in club football again.
