After shipping out Roman Pavlyuchenko to Lokomotiv Moscow for £7.5m and replacing him with a loan deal for Louis Saha from Everton, Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham manager, made a late and successful move to sign the Blackburn Rovers captain, Ryan Nelsen, on a permanent deal until the end of the season. The New Zealand international will move to White Hart Lane, with his situation to be reviewed in the summer.

Redknapp had made a failed attempt to land Nelsen's Ewood Park team-mate Chris Samba earlier in the transfer window. Instead, he pushed through a short-term deal for the 34-year-old that will give him cover in the centre of his defence.

Nelsen has started only one Premier League game this season in a campaign riddled with injury problems. However, Redknapp believes he is fit enough to play a part in his side's push for a Champions League place.

It has also allowed the Tottenham manager to let Sebastien Bassong go on loan to struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers. Again, the deal is a loan until the end of the current campaign, with the 25-year-old unhappy at his role this season as a bit-part player.

Mick McCarthy, whose side made it nine games without a win last night when they lost at home to Liverpool, desperately needs to shore up his defence.

Redknapp seemed to have failed, however, in his bid to sign the Serbian winger Milos Krasic from Juventus, with the 27-year-old keen to move to the Premier League. The Spurs manager did, though, let Steven Pienaar return to Everton on loan until the end of the season. The South African had failed to command a regular first-team place since he moved to Spurs for £3m from Goodison Park and he also saw a potential loan move to Queen's Park Rangers fall down as well.

Tottenham did manage to move on Vedran Corluka, with the Croatian defender agreeing to go to Bayer Leverkusen for the rest of the season.

Late last night Seville were close to signing the diminutive forward Giovanni Dos Santos from Spurs.

Sam Allardyce at West Ham also managed to complete a late transfer when he landed the Bristol City striker Nicky Maynard for £1.65m.

Allardyce had been linked heavily to Huddersfield's Jordan Rhodes but was scared off the player's £5m asking price. Instead he turned to Maynard and completed the deal shortly before the transfer window closed. The 25-year-old's contract at Ashton Gate was due to run out at the end of the season. Earlier in the day Allardyce had completed the signing of Manchester United's highly-regarded youngster Ravel Morrison.

One bid that was unsuccessful was Rangers' attempt to sign Grant Holt from Norwich City, the Premier League club refusing to part with their striker.
