Tottenham vs Manchester United result: Player ratings as Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes combine to rescue draw

Fernandes’ penalty cancelled out Steven Bergwijn’s opener

Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba combined to rescue Manchester United a point against Tottenham Hotspur.

Steven Bergwijn gave Jose Mourinho’s side the lead with a brilliant breakaway, skipping past Harry Maguire with ease before drilling a shot through the palms of the increasingly error-prone David de Gea.

United poured on the pressure in the second half, though, after Pmiogba – making his first appearance since December – skipped away from Eric Dier at the byline before being tugged down in the box. Fernandes then sent Lloris the wrong way from the spot.

Fernandes then thought he’d won another penalty in stoppage time after a collision with Eric Dier, however, VAR overturned the decision with the spoils shared at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham

Hugo Lloris – 8: Made two excellent saves to deny Rashford in the first-half before another brilliant reflex stop to tip away Anthony Martial’s strike in the second.

Serge Aurier – 6: Uncharacteristically disciplined in defence, but did struggle with Rashford’s sharp bursts of pace at times.

Davinson Sanchez – 7: Was a calm and composed presence in defence, preventing United’s fast-paced attack from breaking dangerously.

Eric Dier – 5: Impressed in his favoured central defensive role and carried his technical ability on the ball with him from midfield, but was caught out by Pogba badly towards the end of the match, conceding the penalty that led to United’s equaliser.

Ben Davies – 7: Contained James effectively down the right-wing and was rarely troubled.

Harry Winks – 6: Controlled the pace of the game well, dictating from the base of midfield, but was slightly overrun as United poured on the pressure in the second half.

Moussa Sissoko – 7: Was indispensable to Spurs before his injury earlier this season and resumed his commanding role in midfield.

Erik Lamela – 7: A frenetic and feisty presence at the top of Spurs’ midfielder trio, finding pockets of space and harrying United’s defence. Struggled to pick out the final ball at times.

Steven Bergwijn - 8: Winger finished off a brilliant counter-attack, ghosting past Harry Maguire and beating David De Gea, to open the scoring. Consistently sprung United’s offside trap and tracked back valuably to cover the threat of Marcus Rashford.

Son Heung-min – 6: A willing and incisive runner, particularly when tracking back in the second half, but his efforts were slightly overshadowed by Bergwijn on the opposing wing.

Harry Kane – 5: Was anonymous for large parts of the game, with some rust still understandably needing to be shaken after such a long spell on the sidelines.

Manchester United

David de Gea – 4: Allowed Bergwijn’s shot to fizz through his fingers for Spurs’ opener.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6: Did well to contain Son for much of the game but offered little in the way of impetus or creativity going forwards.

Harry Maguire – 5: Was turned horribly by Berwijn on the counter-attack and struggled to deal with the pace of Spurs on the counter-attack.

Victor Lindelof – 5: Was caught labouring by Spurs’ counter-attack in the first half before limping off towards the end of the match.

Luke Shaw – 5: A poor header led to Spurs opener and generally struggled to deal with the pace of Bergwijn.

Fred – 6: Played well at the base of midfield, linking play and recovering possession, before being replaced in the second half.

Scott McTominay – 6: Was feisty and tireless, and played well when forced into central defence late on.

Bruno Fernandes – 7: Was instrumental to United’s attacking threat, as has now already become customary, and scored the equalising penalty.

Daniel James – 5: Struggled to make his presence felt in the game.

Marcus Rashford – 7: Looked sharp on his return to the pitch, bursting into space dangerously throughout the match but lacked a goalscoring finish.

Anthony Martial – 5: Hesitated when presented with a great opportunity in the second half and, although showing flashes of danger, was eventually replaced by Odion Ighalo.
