Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Jamie Carragher believes that Cesc Fabregas' lack of "tactical intelligence" was a big reason for Chelsea's poor defeat at the hands of Manchester City on Sunday.
The former Liverpool defender stated that while Fabregas is a "fantastic" player, his inability to defend helped City dominate on their way to a 3-0 victory.
Manuel Pellegrini's team created numerous chances down Chelsea's right side, where Fabregas and Ramires failed to protect Branislav Ivanovic.
"Why do you play Ramires?" Carragher said on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.
"Because you've got someone in Cesc Fabregas who is a fantastic footballer, creates goals, scores goals, but he can't defend as we saw in the first 10 seconds when David Silva turns him and puts Sergio Aguero through.
"He lacks tactical intelligence, especially defensively. That's one of the reasons Barcelona let Chelsea take him."
Chelsea's left was much more solid with Nemanja Matic and Willian helping Cesar Azpilicueta keep Jesus Navas relatively quiet, but Raheem Sterling and especially David Silva were free to cause the Blues all sorts of problems, leading to a number of chances for Sergio Aguero.
Carragher added: "If you play him in there [central midfield], Fabregas needs protection from Matic and Ramires and he didn't get that, especially from Ramires.
"The problems they had down that left side came from Ramires and Fabregas together."
