Premier League: How the league table has unfolded so far

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Leeds suffered an almighty blow in their bid for automatic promotion after being defeated 2-1 by 10-man Wigan at Elland Road.

Bolton's dismal season, on and off the pitch, was finally condemned to relegation with defeat against Aston Villa, while Rotherham's survival hopes took another dent with a dramatic 4-3 loss to Swansea.

Sheffield United ensured Norwich cannot secure promotion to the Premier League this evening with a 1-0 win against Nottingham Forest.

Meanwhile, there were wins for West Brom and Blackburn, while the shares were spoiled elsewhere on a free-scoring day in the Championship.

FT: Bristol City 1-1 Reading

Full-time at Ashton Gate and an opportunity missed for Bristol who dominated large parts of the game.

Meite gave Reading the lead against the run of play at the start of the second-half, before Brownhill equalised after 72 minutes. But Bristol couldn't find the winner over the course of a frantic end.

They remain in sixth but Middlesbrough and Derby will have a chance to close the gap, while Reading steadily clamber their way towards safety.

GOAL! Sheffield United 2-0 Nottingham Forest (Stevens, 86)

There'll be no promotion for Norwich. Sheffield have taken the game out of reach with a brilliant finish from Evans to douse Forest's burst of late pressure.
