Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Liverpool fans hailed the return of Jon Flanagan to the first XI as the local lad started his first match for the Reds since May 2014.
The 23-year-old, who won an England cap in the build up to the Brazil World Cup, suffered a terrible injury that left him out for the whole of last season.
Given the affectionate nickname the 'Scouse Cafu' by Liverpool fans, Flanagan looked as if he would be a fixture at right-back before injury.
Now back from that career-threatening injury, Flanagan played 40 minutes against Exeter City in the FA Cup third round replay last week, but Jurgen Klopp felt he was ready from the start against Stoke City on Tuesday night.
He quickly became a top trend on Twitter, with Liverpool fans hailing him as the only competent player in their dodgy back five.
Rival fans, however, were quick to mock his looks (we won't republish those here).
Here is some of the best reaction:
