The midfielder twisted his right ankle during last night's 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in their opening Champions League game.
It is not yet clear whether or for how long the England international will be ruled out, but Wenger admitted he was concerned, owing to the midfielder's previous injury problems.
"It's difficult to say how bad it is," the Arsenal manager said. "Normally it would not be too bad but I am a bit cautious because of his history."
The ankle hurt is the same joint that ruled Wilshere out for 17 months and comes just as the 22-year-old looked to be hitting some form.
Wenger will be desperate to see Wilshere make a quick recovery with a number of key players already absent. Mathieu Debuchy and Olivier Giroud have been ruled out until Christmas, whilst Serge Gnabry and Theo Walcott are yet to feature this season.
