England vs Switzerland LIVE: Euro 2022 warm-up game result and reaction as Lionesses win in style
Follow reaction from Zurich after the Lionesses finalise preparations for next week’s home European Championships with a big win
England travel to Zurich to take on Switzerland in their final warm-up match before Euro 2022 gets underway on home soil next week.
The Lionesses are still unbeaten since coach Sarina Wiegman took over last September and impressive victories over Belgium and reigning European champions Netherlands in their most recent two warm-up fixtures have extended that record.
England are legitimate contenders to win Euro 2022 but this is Wiegman’s last chance to take a look at her players before the tournament’s opening match against Austria at Old Trafford next Wednesday.
Switzerland have also qualified for the tournament, so will provide a stiff test for the Lionesses, who have their 50-goal record scorer Ellen White available again after she missed the victory over the Dutch after testing positive for Covid.
Relive the action as England triumph in their final Euros warm-up match against Switzerland:
Switzerland 0-0 England
Looking at replays at half-time and that potential Maritz handball before the break does look like it struck her arm. If VAR was in operation, that might have been a spot-kick.
England have been wasteful in the first 45 minutes but they produced a second-half blitz against Netherlands last time out, so will look to do the same again.
And five of their eight goals in the last two matches have been scored by substitutes, so the Lionesses have a habit of coming on strong.
HALF-TIME! Switzerland 0-0 England
And that’s half-time. A scoreless first half but the Lionesses have had the better chances with a couple of great saves by Friedli and a Rachel Daly header cleared off the line.
45’ - Switzerland 0-0 England
Turnabout is fair play, I guess... Russo goes in hard on Calligaris as she tries to win the ball back but takes all player and no ball. It was a bit late as well. A yellow card for Russo, which she can’t complain about.
44’ - Switzerland 0-0 England
Yellow card for Viola Calligaris (a cracking name by the way!) as she brings down Russo - had to really, in order to stop the Lionesses forward getting through on goal.
It means a free-kick on the right that Greenwood whips in and Reuteler makes a mess of her clearance but the referee blows up for a high foot against Stanway, who blocked it. A bit of a let-off for the Swiss there.
43’ - Switzerland 0-0 England
Another good Greenwood corner to the back post causes havoc in the Swiss area. Daly rises highest but it just brushes off her head and the ball then hits Maritz near the arm, probably chest though and England’s appeals for a penalty are waved away. The Swiss able to clear
42’ - Switzerland 0-0 England
Bright optimistically tries one from about 30 or 35 yards but it’s blocked. Have to respect the ambition! The Lionesses then hassle Aigbogun but she’s able to slice the ball clear.
Some more neat link-up ends with Stanway whipping in a cross but Aigbogun nods it out for a corner.
39’ - CLOSE! Switzerland 0-0 England
Daly goes in for a 50-50 against Reuteler and comes out second best. She stays down afterwards.
The Swiss break down the left and a gorgeous cross from Maendly bounces beyond the diving Earps where Crnogorcevic gets a foot on it by sliding in at the back post but can’t get a proper connection and it bobbles wide. Close! Probably Switzerland’s best chance
37’ - Switzerland 0-0 England
The passing and ball retention has been very good by the Lionesses today but they haven’t quite been able to break down the Swiss red wall.
34’ - Switzerland 0-0 England
England try to go aerial to Hemp but she can’t win the ball against a defender towering over her. Probably not the best tactic to be honest - much better ways to get Hemp in the game.
