A hat-trick from Mason Mount propelled Chelsea to a 7-0 win over bottom side Norwich City in the Premier League on Saturday, extending their lead at the top of the table.
Mount opened Chelsea’s account when he sent the ball low into the net after a layoff from Jorginho in a move started down the left by the ever-busy Callum Hudson-Odoi.
The 20-year-old Hudson-Odoi earned his own reward 11 minutes later when he latched on to a pinpoint throughball from Mateo Kovacic and held his nerve to fire home past the outstretched leg of Norwich keeper Tim Krul.
A third Chelsea Academy product got on the scoresheet three minutes before halftime when Mount slid the ball into the path of Reece James and the wing-back produced a delicious chip over the advancing Krul.
It took 12 minutes of the second half for Chelsea’s, now purring, machine to score again when left back Ben Chilwell sent a Kovacic pass across the face of the goal and into the back of the net past a despairing Krul.
Norwich, who have failed to win a game this season and have scored just two goals, were in disarray and then suffered the indignity of an own goal from Max Aarons in the 62nd and a sending off for Ben Gibson after a second yellow card two minutes later.
Krul saved a penalty from Mount late in the game but VAR showed he had moved off his line and when the kick was retaken in the 85th minute Mount made no mistake. Mount capped off a fine performance with a tap in from a Ruben Loftus-Cheek pass in the 91st.
OFF THE LINE! How has Dunk kept that out?
12 mins: City sweep up the pitch and slide Gabriel Jesus into the right side of the box. He shifts away from a tackle but looks like he’s kept hold of the ball too long. Sanchez comes out to close him down just as Jesus takes the shot. The goalkeeper gets a good chunk of the ball but not enough to fully stop it from bouncing into the net. That is until Lewis Dunk leaps towards the ball and kicks it back over his own head to clear it off the line! Brilliant defending!

11 mins: A poor pass from Walker gives the ball away to Pascal Gross who dribbles up towards the box. He’s got options in front of him as City scramble to get back but he messes up with a miscued ball that comes straight to Grealish.
Brighton 0 - 0 Man City
8 mins: Save! Joao Cancelo gets an early sighter after Jack Grealish brings the ball into the left side of the box. He cuts it back to the left-back who checks to the right before sending a low shot towards the near post and forcing Robert Sanchez into a one-handed diving stop.
Brighton 0 - 0 Man City
6 mins: Phil Foden wins a free kick on the left wing for City after Lewis tracks him across the pitch and gives him a little shove in the back. Foden himself swings the set piece into the penalty area but Solly March is the first man to the ball and he heads it away.
Brighton 0 - 0 Man City
3 mins: Nice play from Brighton as Leandro Trossard carries the ball down their right flank. He slots it inside to Jakub Moder who sweetly turns towards goal evading a tackle in midfield. He overruns as he approaches the box allowing Aymeric Laporte to win the ball but it was an early sign of Brighton’s attacking mindset.
Brighton 0 - 0 Man City
Kick off: Manchester City get the ball rolling at the Amex Stadium. They’re wearing their god-awful third kit and send the ball out to Kyle Walker easing his way forward on the right side. The diagonal ball drops for him but big Dan Burn nips in front of the right-back and heads it out for a throw in.
Brighton vs Man City
Here come the players. This should be a decent match. Brighton have been defensively solid so far this season and should prove to be tough opponents for Man City. The longer the game goes without City scoring the more Brighton will grow in confidence.
Brighton vs Man City
Raheem Sterling isn’t included in the Manchester City squad for today’s game and Pep Guardiola confirmed that this is down to a back problem for the England forward.
It’s a blow for City as Sterling has scored four goals in four Premier League starts against Brighton, netting a hat-trick on his last visit to the Amex Stadium in July 2020.
