A hat-trick from Mason Mount propelled Chelsea to a 7-0 win over bottom side Norwich City in the Premier League on Saturday, extending their lead at the top of the table.
Mount opened Chelsea’s account when he sent the ball low into the net after a layoff from Jorginho in a move started down the left by the ever-busy Callum Hudson-Odoi.
The 20-year-old Hudson-Odoi earned his own reward 11 minutes later when he latched on to a pinpoint throughball from Mateo Kovacic and held his nerve to fire home past the outstretched leg of Norwich keeper Tim Krul.
A third Chelsea Academy product got on the scoresheet three minutes before halftime when Mount slid the ball into the path of Reece James and the wing-back produced a delicious chip over the advancing Krul.
It took 12 minutes of the second half for Chelsea’s, now purring, machine to score again when left back Ben Chilwell sent a Kovacic pass across the face of the goal and into the back of the net past a despairing Krul.
Norwich, who have failed to win a game this season and have scored just two goals, were in disarray and then suffered the indignity of an own goal from Max Aarons in the 62nd and a sending off for Ben Gibson after a second yellow card two minutes later.
Krul saved a penalty from Mount late in the game but VAR showed he had moved off his line and when the kick was retaken in the 85th minute Mount made no mistake. Mount capped off a fine performance with a tap in from a Ruben Loftus-Cheek pass in the 91st.
Brighton 0 - 3 Man City
41 mins: Solly March swings a corner ball into the penalty area but his cross sails over everyone and is collected by Jesus. He flicks the ball over a defender and threatens to sweep up the pitch before deciding to pass it to Cancelo who loses the ball to a sliding Adam Lallana.
Brighton 0 - 3 Man City
38 mins: Phil Foden has been awarded the third goal as well due to the deflection so he’s got himself a brace already. Not a bad trip to the seaside so far for the Englishman.
Brighton 0 - 3 Man City
35 mins: It thought the game would be a lot closer than this but Brighton only have themselves to blame. Two of the three goals have come from sloppy passes and them seem so open at the back. There are gaps everywhere for City to exploit.
GOAL! Brighton 0 - 3 Man City (Foden, 31’)⚽️
31 mins: That’s game over. Dunk gives the ball away to Bernardo who runs it to the edge of the box and lays it off to Jesus on the right. He fires a pass over to Grealish who brings it down and sends a shot towards the near post. Sanchez keeps it out but the rebound falls to Jesus who blasts it at the goalkeeper, the shot hits Foden and deflects into the back of the net.
GOAL! Brighton 0 - 2 Man City (Foden, 28’)⚽️
28 mins: City are lethal on the counter! Cucurella loses misplaces a pass and gives the ball to Bernardo Silva. He turns towards goal and slots a delightful pass up for Grealish. Grealish dribbles into the area, draws out the goalkeeper and then squares a pass to Foden. Foden and Burn both go for the ball, initially it looks as though Foden clipped it into the back of the net but a replay shows it may have come off Burn. Either way it’s another goal for Man City.
Brighton 0 - 1 Man City
26 mins: Kyle Walker is booked for clipping the heels of Marc Cucurella and stopping a Brighton attack from developing.
Bernardo Silva is given the ball out on the right wing and spies Foden making a run into the box. A threaded diagonal pass it meant to pick of the youngster but Sanchez reads the play and sprints off his line to scoop up the loose ball before Foden can reach it.
Brighton 0 - 1 Man City
23 mins: Only Mo Salah (16) and Harry Kane (15) have scored more Premier League goals in 2021 than Manchester City’s Ilkay Gündogan (13).
Brighton 0 - 1 Man City
20 mins: Save! Man City turn it on again, they seem to be able to pass it around Brighton’s defence whenever they move the ball quickly. Foden drives the ball up the middle of the pitch as City break on the counter-attack. He’s got Grealish and Jesus up with him and decides to play it over to the left. Grealish then cuts inside and has a shot deflected over to Jesus. It’s a lucky break for City as Jesus rolls the ball onto his left foot and hits a low shot towards the back post. Sanchez is down quickly and makes another decent one-handed save.
Brighton 0 - 1 Man City
17 mins: Brighton have responded brightly to going behind. Maupay goes wide from range and then Trossard works the ball clear down the right and picks out Moder with a cross into the middle. Moder wins the header but doesn’t trouble the goalkeeper.
GOAL! Brighton 0 - 1 Man City (Gundogan, 13’)⚽️
13 mins: That didn’t take long. It’s a shocker from Sanchez. Rodri dinks the ball into the box to Walker who passes it inside for Bernardo to lay it off for Foden. Foden’s shot loops up into the six-yard box and should be easily claimed by Sanchez. Instead he drops it under pressure from Jesus and Bernardo gets to the loose ball. He chips it over the goalkeeper and Gundogan is there to tap it home.
