Hosts India bundled out Pakistan for 191 in 42.5 overs before quickly chasing down their target to win a World Cup blockbuster between the Asian arch-rivals at a heaving Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday.

Put in to bat, Pakistan were on 155-2 in the 30th over and appeared to be cruising towards a 300-plus total with skipper Babar Azam (50) and in-form batter Mohammad Rizwan (49) at the crease. But India’s Mohammed Siraj then dismissed Babar, triggering a spectacular collapse, with Pakistan unable to hold out for the rest of their quota of 50 overs. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the Indian bowlers, claiming 2-19 in a clinical display of his distinctive style of seam bowling.

Rohit Sharma then fired 86 from 63 balls en route to a quick win, as India extended their record to three from three. Get the latest Cricket World Cup odds here.

Is India vs Pakistan on TV? How to watch ICC Cricket World Cup

India take on Pakistan in the most highly anticipated match of the ICC Cricket World Cup round-robin group stage on Saturday 8 October at the 134,000-seater Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

There are few bigger rivalries in the world of sport than between the two cricketing nations, who due to political tensions have not played the other since 2012 outside of major ICC events. The game itself is hailed as having “a billion eyes” on the action, due to the populations of both countries and the popularity of the sport.

India have won their first two matches - against Australia and Afghanistan - comfortably, with Rohit Sharma smashing a number of records in the latter as the host nation laid down a marker at the tournament. Pakistan came back to beat Sri Lanka in a high-scoring clash against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad, and the game against India will be their second match.

The tournament has not been without its difficulties for Pakistan, who had to wait for their visas, causing a pre-match bonding trip to the United Arab Emirates to be cancelled, but since their arrival, captain Babar Azam spoke warmly of the welcome from India.

India vs Pakistan: ‘The biggest rivalry in sport’

It is rare when the most highly anticipated match of the tournament is not the final. But India vs Pakistan matches, especially in Cricket World Cups, have taken on an almost mythical status.

There are not many matches that can claim to be followed by up to a billion people, in fact, the football World Cup final is the only one that comes to mind, but the eyes of the cricketing world will be firmly fixed on Ahmedabad on Saturday.

Sport often takes on a political context, you only need to look as far back as the recent World Cup in Qatar to see examples of that. It is not a modern phenomenon either, the sporting boycott of Apartheid South Africa, or during the Cold War when the Olympics became an almost-battle ground for supremacy between the United States and the USSR.

In India and Pakistan, it can be even harder to separate sport and politics.

The ICC Test Championship sees nine teams compete across a two-year cycle of matches before a two-team final decides the winner. The inaugural competition was won by New Zealand after a thrilling victory over India in June 2021.

The 50-over World Cup is far older and has been competed for since back in 1975. Australia are the record winners having run out victorious on five occasions (1987, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2015). England took the 2019 crown after a dramatic Ben Stokes-inspired super-over win over New Zealand at Lord's.

The shortest form of the game sees teams compete in Twenty20. The newest format has been an instant global hit with a number of hugely-lucrative competitions massively popular all over the world. Australia are reigning world champions having taken victory in the 2021 tournament.
