The Democrat leadership issued a joint statement to the president to “demand” his supporters bring an end to the chaos that has engulfed Washington DC.
“We are calling on President Trump to demand that all protesters leave the US Capitol and Capitol grounds immediately,” they said in the statement.
They are the latest in a growing chorus of voices calling on Mr Trump come out more forcefully against the riots in an effort to bring an end to the violence, with former governor Chris Christie saying on ABC he’s been trying to reach the president
“The president has to come out and tell his supporters to leave the Capitol grounds," he said.
The president has been tweeting to his supporters to remain peaceful and respect the police as the “party of Law & Order”.

Joe Biden said the country’s democracy was under assault and called on Mr Trump should publicly address the nation for a more impactful call for peace.
“I call on president Trump to go on national television now to fulfil his oath and defend the constitution and demand an end to this siege,” Mr Biden said.
“This is not dissent, it’s disorder, it’s chaos. It borders on sedition. And it must end now. I call on this mob to pull back and allow the work of democracy to go forward,” he added.
The president responded on Twitter saying he loves his special supporters but they have to “go home now”, while continuing to say the election was solen from them.
“I know your pain, I know your hurt, we had an election that was stolen from us, it was a landslide election, and everyone knows it, especially the other side,” Mr Trump began.
“But you have to go home now, we have to have peace, we have to have law and order, we have to respect our great people in law and order. We don’t want anybody hurt. It’s a very tough period of time, there’s never been a time like this where such a thing happened where they could take it away, from all of us. From me, from you, from our country.”
He added: “We love you, you’re very special, you’ve seen what happens, you’ve seen the way others are treated that are so bad and so evil I know how you feel. But go home and go home in peace.”
