An elderly woman has died and another woman has been arrested following an incident in South Lanarkshire.

Police were called to reports of a woman being seriously injured in a house in Gilmour Drive, Hamilton, at around 8.25pm on Wednesday.

The 78-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Scotland are treating the incident as unexplained and a 49-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with alleged assault.

Officers are still in the area and have encouraged the public to come forward with any information while inquiries continue.
