Why is Theresa May still prime minister?

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Labour has seen off a challenge from Nigel Farage's Brexit Party in a knife-edge by-election in Peterborough.

Mr Farage's newly-formed outfit lost out to Labour by 683 votes, in a blow to the former Ukip leader's hopes of building its recent European election showing.

As Theresa May formally bowed out as Tory leader, the Conservatives slumped to third place in what is traditionally a Tory-Labour marginal seat.

Meanwhile, Tory leadership hopeful Boris Johnson won a legal challenge, which means he will not appear in court over allegations he committed misconduct in a public office by “misleading the public” about Brexit.

And Jo Swinson and Ed Davey will go to head in the battle to become Lib Dem leader after being announced as the only two candidates running in the contest to replace Sir Vince Cable.

Tory leadership hopeful Rory Stewart says bringing back compulsory national service for 16 year olds could tackle young people’s mental health and unite Britain.

The international development secretary posted a video on Twitter where he committed to launching a so-called National Citizen Service “on the day that I take over as prime minister”.

He said it was “not a military service, but a national service for every young person at 16”.

“They will go, spend two weeks with people from different backgrounds often in an outdoor education setting - to learn skills, develop confidence - and then two weeks giving back to a community with a community designed project,” he added.

Jo Swinson and Sir Ed Davey are the only candidates in the contest for the Liberal Democrat leadership.

The contest was triggered by Sir Vince Cable’s decision to stand down from the role.

Deputy leader Ms Swinson and former cabinet minister Sir Ed will face a postal ballot of the party’s membership, with the result due to be announced on 23 July.

East Dunbartonshire MP Ms Swinson is the bookmakers’ favourite in the race and has served as Sir Vince’s deputy since June 2017.

Kingston and Surbiton MP Sir Ed served as energy secretary in the coalition government under David Cameron.
