Armed police surrounded a house in South Lanarkshire after a man was spotted brandishing a crossbow.

Firearms officers and a helicopter were sent to the home in Blantyre, near Glasgow, at about 11am.

Police Scotland said a 36-year-old man had been arrested.

Firefighters are currently tackling a blaze at the house in Morris Crescent the force said.

A police spokeswoman said paramedics had checked over a woman who was also in the house, but that no injuries had yet been reported.

There was no suggestion she was being held against her will, she added.

Local media reported that pupils at nearby schools were kept inside during the incident, but that the schools were not involved.
